shirkeit history
Keith & I were Foundation Members of the Whyalla Greyhound Racing Club, I
went to look at a litter of Greyhounds and fell in love with a beautiful Black & White girl.
I named her Lady Shirkeit, and decided I would show her until she was old enough to train
for the racetrack.
Sheba was a gem to own, the first time I showed her she was 10 months old, there were
6 Greyhounds entered and to my delight she won the Challenge, then Best of Breed & Puppy
in Group.
When it came time for the serious track work, Sheba had been too much a pet, living inside and sleeping on the lounge were much better than chasing a stuffed bunny.
So I decided to keep her as my companion and show dog.

We moved to Adelaide in 1974, and joined the Whippet & Greyhound Club.
We were so close to the show grounds, I would walk over to watch the Judging.
Sheba enjoyed the show-ring and we started to do quite a bit of winning, Greyhounds were strong in the Hound Group and she soon became Australian Champion Lady Shirkeit.
Sheba only won the 1 Best Exhibit in Group, but won many Class in Group & In Show awards.

We bred our first litter of greyhounds in 1975, I kept a White & Fawn bitch.
Shining Shannon also did quite well in the show-ring, and at 12 months went to a trainer for
her racing lessons.
She won her Maiden race at Gawler, and showed a lot of promise when she was involved in an
accident on the track and was put down.

Our next litter was bred in 1976, I kept a Brindle & White bitch.
Simone raced as Spunky Lady, she was only a small girl but she had such spunk.
She was to go on and win 15 races for me, after her racing days were over I started showing her.
She soon became Australian Champion Shirkeit Simone and my most memorable win was
in 1981 at the Adelaide Royal when she went Opposite Sex in Group.
Simone also won Opposite Sex in Show at the Whippet & Greyhound Club in 1979.

In 1981 a beautiful Silver Fawn & White Whippet came to live with me, and became the foundation bitch for Shirkeit Whippets.
Australian Champion Allswell Deal Me In, what a fantastic ambassador for the breed.

The Whippet & Greyhound Club started racing, and of course I had to have a go at this.
All of my Whippets took part, and they soon became champions at this sport.
Luke (Australian Champion Shirkeit Stop N Look) held the Track record for 150 meters at Aldinga, and for the 3 years that we raced he was never beaten.
His sister (Australian Champion Shirkeit Scene Stealer) tried on many occasions and was always beaten by him.

John Spoolder, a Greyhound trainer owned Allswell Front Runner.
Front Runner and Luke had many a good race, the Greyhound Owners & Breeders would bet in cans of beer when these two dogs made it through to the final.

Have a look at my past Greyhounds and Whippets also my present Whippets, I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I did owning such wonderful little friends.
